The architect and the design
Richard Meier won the Pritzker Prize in 1984 and is known for white, geometric buildings in glass and metal. In Tel Aviv he took his cue from the White City, the Bauhaus district recognised by UNESCO. He has said that the buildings of the White City made a deep impression on him.
The tower has a modular, rectilinear form in concrete, with a glazed facade layered behind a gridded aluminium louver screen. The louvers work as a veil. Sliding blinds inside let residents control privacy and light. Large windows run from floor to ceiling, and slim columns lift the tower off the ground so that the retail level at its base stays transparent.
The building
The residential floors stand on a commercial base of about 2,900 sqm, with shops and cafes facing Yavne and Allenby streets and a six-level car park. The plans changed several times. The tower began as a 27-floor design in 2008, grew to 32 floors in 2010, and was fixed at 37 residential floors in 2011.
What residents have
The building has an Olympic-length pool, a spa, a private wine cellar for each apartment, lounges and a concierge. Apartments have high ceilings, parquet floors and hidden thresholds and lintels.
Location
The tower stands where Rothschild Boulevard meets Allenby Street, in the heart of Tel Aviv. The beach is within walking distance, and the tower is close to Neve Tzedek and the Suzanne Dellal Centre. For a walk through that neighbourhood, see our guide to Neve Tzedek.
Reported sales
In October 2011 the top penthouse, a three-floor apartment of about 2,200 sqm, was reported sold for NIS 200 million. It was described at the time as the most expensive apartment ever sold in Israel. This is a historical, reported figure, and prices for standard apartments are far lower and vary with floor, size and condition. Living here as a Diaspora buyer
Meier on Rothschild suits a buyer who wants a full-service building in the centre of the city rather than on the seafront. Concierge service and the building’s amenities make it practical for someone who is abroad for part of the year.
